Nicklaus Children’s Health System and Baptist Health Collaborate

MIAMI – Sept. 23, 2020– Nicklaus Children’s Health System and Baptist Health South Florida have signed an agreement to expand their collaboration on pediatric care. This enhanced partnership of two of South Florida’s leading healthcare organizations will optimize care for both pediatric and adult patients.

Under the agreement, which becomes effective December 1, Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS) physicians will cover the pediatric emergency departments at Baptist Hospital and at Homestead Hospital. The physicians who are currently providing care at these facilities will become employed by NCPS, the medical group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System, and continue to care for pediatric patients at Baptist Hospital and at Homestead Hospital.

Additionally, Baptist Hospital will extend an arrangement in place since April to transfer children who require inpatient admission to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital for care. Baptist Hospital continues to provide other pediatric services including neonatal intensive care (NICU), pediatric oncology services (including inpatient care for pediatric oncology) and pediatric emergency care, among other services.

The transfer arrangement, which was based on a recommendation from the Children’s Hospital Association, began as a way to optimize the organizations’ response to the COVID-19 virus and increase capacity for adult patients at Baptist Hospital.

“We’ve collaborated with Nicklaus Children’s Health System for many years,” said Bo Boulenger, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “This expansion of our relationship allows us to leverage each organization’s expertise and provides continuity of care for pediatric patients and their families, while ensuring we are prepared for increases in adult patient volume.”

“Baptist Health has done an amazing job at giving families ready access to world-class care. Nicklaus Children’s is the region’s only freestanding hospital exclusively for children and the largest provider of pediatric emergency services in Florida,” said Perry Ann Reed, President of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Nicklaus Children’s Health System. “This enhanced partnership just makes sense and will be an incredible benefit to the children and families of Florida.”

While this is not a merger and both organizations will remain separate entities, as part of the agreement, Nicklaus Children’s and Baptist Health will work together for the betterment of the children and families of South Florida.

“This collaboration will enable families to continue to receive pediatric emergency services in the Baptist facilities and with the same doctors and staff that they’ve come to know,” said Dr. Marcos Mestre, M.D., Senior Medical Director at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. “The biggest difference will be in how we coordinate care and the increased access to subspecialists that can support children and families through their care continuum and into adulthood.”

Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute First to use Innovative Device to Treat Long Bone Injuries

MIAMI – September 9, 2020 – Dr. Charles Jordan, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, part of Baptist Health, is the first in the world to implant a new-to-the market, 3-D printed Graft Cage to heal long bone injuries. Long bone injuries often result from traumatic impacts, such as bad car accidents. The TruMatch Graft Cage is 3-D printed in just 10 days, making it highly customizable to a patient’s body to restore and heal long bone injuries. It works by supporting bone grafts, which act as fillers to aid new bone growth and later absorbs into the body, meaning no follow-up procedure is required.

“One of the things that is thought to greatly increase the rate at which bone grafting procedures heal is to have a scaffolding,” said Dr. Charles Jordan, orthopedic trauma surgeon at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. “So, this graft cage is really innovative because it is 3-D printed to the patient’s specifications. We’re actually taking the bone defect and making a model that fits inside that defect. But it is also a scaffolding that remains there for the time it needs to be there. And then it gets absorbed by the body.”

Dr. Jordan added: “This device is kind of like the missing link to the puzzle for these sorts of procedures. We’re changing the way that we treat these injuries. Previously, there was often just a piece missing to fully heal and restore long bone injuries. This is the piece.”

In addition to Dr. Jordan being the first surgeon in the world to implant the Graft Cage, according to Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of the Graft Cage, this is also the first cage implant device to be 3-D printed. Also, while there have been other types of “cages” used for similar procedures, none contain the material to be safely absorbed by the body.

BOCA RATON, FL – September 8, 2020 – The Sands Family Foundation and Constellation Brands, have made a joint $1,000,000 gift to Keeping the Promise…The Campaign for Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Rob Sands is executive chair of Constellation Brands, a leading total beverage alcohol company founded in Canandaigua, New York, where the Sands family originally hails from, and their foundation has been an active supporter in the areas of healthcare, education and the arts.

“Donors such as the Sands Family Foundation and Constellation Brands are gratifying to all of us raising money for the campaign, and everybody at the hospital.” said Stan Barry, chairman of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation and co-chair of the Keeping the Promise campaign. “They can immediately see the impact of their support in the value of our work, our partnerships, and our future.”

The Sands Family Foundation also underwrote the 2019 inaugural Glow Red Golf Tournament to benefit the Christine E. Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute.

The $250 million Keeping the Promise campaign is the largest campaign in the hospital’s history. It is supporting the most ambitious period of growth and expansion for Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The campus redevelopment plans include at the centerpiece, the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower where patients will be welcomed in the inviting new Louis B. and Anne W. Green Lobby with plans for retail, dining, meeting space, a sanctuary and other conveniences for visitors. The new tower features all new surgical suites and all private patient rooms exceeding the latest safety standards for patient care. An expansion of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute is underway with an emphasis on neurovascular/stroke, central nervous system and epilepsy/seizure disorders.

In the current hospital building, all existing rooms will be converted to private in a comprehensive renovation of all patient units. The recently opened 972-car Schmidt Family Parking Facility will be connected to the main hospital once construction is complete. Also included in the plans is the new Toby and Leon Cooperman Medical Arts Pavilion, to be located across the street from the hospital with an outpatient surgery center, physician offices and additional parking. These investments are the initial steps toward an even broader vision for the campus with greater access points and even more specialties.

“My parents set a wonderful philanthropic example and instilled in us the importance of giving back to support your community,” said Rob Sands. “It is a tradition, that as a company and as individuals, we continue to uphold. I hope our contribution inspires other philanthropic gifts to Boca Regional in this fundraising effort.”
