Baptist Health and Philips Extend Collaboration: Working Together, the Organizations Will Continue to Develop New Technologies

October 21, 2021

MIAMI, FL – October 21, 2021 – Baptist Health South Florida and Philips, a global leader in health technology, have entered a new five-year collaboration agreement. The collaboration further cements their commitment to develop technologies that will improve the healthcare experience, including those in the areas of clinical solutions, informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

“Both of our organizations are determined to discover innovative healthcare solutions,” said Mark Coticchia, Baptist Health corporate vice president for Innovation. “This growing collaboration with Philips builds upon decades of medical innovation by both companies ― separately and together ― and will drive improvements in patient health.”

The two organizations have a rich history of innovation that goes back over 30 years to the pioneering work at Baptist Health’s Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Under the expert guidance of Barry T. Katzen, M.D., chief medical innovation officer for Baptist Health, and Carol Melvin, chief operating officer for the Institute, the organization has provided valuable clinical insights that have helped Philips extend its innovation leadership in Image Guided Therapy. Baptist Health is a pioneering home to the advanced endovascular suites.

Baptist Health and Philips have targeted cloud-based propositions and business models, clinical informatics, workflow optimization and AI technologies. Working together, they are able to bring new technologies to Baptist Health patients throughout South Florida. In addition, they can accelerate the development process, speeding a product from concept to the global marketplace. “We are building an entrepreneurial ecosystem of innovation partners, which translates into multiple benefits for our patients,” said Barry T. Katzen, M.D.

Dr. Katzen pioneered many new devices and technologies that have increased the availability of less invasive procedures for those with cardiovascular disease, and recently worked with Philips to design and debut new imaging equipment that can improve the ability for physicians to perform image-guided procedures, particularly in small workspaces that are often filled with the many physicians that a complex procedure requires.

Baptist Health has been a key beta site for Philips and was the first site in North America to install the Azurion next generation image-guided therapy platform, MR Ingenia Ambition and IntelliSpace Portal image post-processing platform. As a leader in the field of ICU telemedicine, Baptist Health began using the Philips eICU program in its ICUs in 2016 to help establish benchmarks and best practices and evaluate quality metrics and performance. In addition, by now moving beyond the traditional reporting and diagnostic utility of data toward predictive and prescriptive capabilities, fast data-driven decisions that support clinical, financial and operational processes will occur.

With Philips’ expertise in technology across hardware, software, service and solution innovation, and Baptist Health’s clinical expertise, diverse patient population and wide-ranging data, the combination offers an environment conducive to turning great ideas into transformative products, devices, therapies and services. While the collaboration will benefit numerous areas, the organizations are first targeting cardiovascular disease management, oncology (notably in informatics and workflows), neurological disease, orthopedics and sports medicine, patient monitoring, and population health and wellness.
“We’re very excited at the potential of impacting the future of healthcare,” Dr. Katzen said. “We continue to grow as a research and innovation hub and this collaboration is an investment in South Florida and beyond.”
