Baptist Health's Bethesda Hospital West Enhances Neurosurgery Procedures With New Surgical Navigation Technology

July 1, 2022

BOYNTON BEACH, FL – July 1, 2022 – Bethesda Hospital West, part of Baptist Health South Florida,  announces it is expanding its neurosurgery procedures by offering the StealthStation™ technology.  This surgical navigation system is designed to help surgeons perform more accurate and precise procedures in the operating room.

The system offers the most advanced version of Stealth™ technology – a combination of medical-grade hardware, software and specialized instruments – for neurosurgery and spine procedures. Timothy O’ Connor, M.D., director of minimally invasive surgery and robotic spine surgery for Marcus Neuroscience Institute, established at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, is the first to perform a procedure with this technology at Bethesda Hospital West. Marcus Neuroscience Institute’s hub is located on the Boca Raton Regional Hospital campus; and in addition to Bethesda Hospital West, offers satellite locations at Bethesda Hospital East in Boynton Beach and Deerfield Beach.

“This innovative technology gives both our staff and patients added confidence during surgery and provides real-time data allowing for an even more accurate and precise result for our patients,” said Dr. O’Connor. I am honored to be the first surgeon to use technology at Bethesda Hospital West, and I look forward to continuing to provide the state-of-the-art neurosurgical care to our community.”

Computer-based surgical navigation solutions have been used as a tool by doctors in operating rooms for many years. Surgical navigation is key to offering enriched visual and quantified information to a surgeon during neurosurgery for accurate tool localization and possible avoidance of key anatomical areas of the brain.

Stealth™ technology has been used in surgical suites for more than 25 years and has assisted in more than 3.5 million procedures. The StealthStation™ enhances previous generations with an intuitive new software interface, high-definition touchscreen monitors and advanced imaging capabilities allowing the surgeon to use pre-operative data during the surgery. Patient registration improvements allow the surgeon more flexibility in registration, while providing quantitative feedback. It also offers planning components, so the surgeon can load and review pre-operative data to assess the procedure and anatomical steps before the patient enters the surgical suite.

The Stealthstation™ is also available at both Bethesda Hospital East and Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health.

About the StealthStation™ System

The StealthStation™ System is intended as an aid for accurately locating anatomical structures in either open or percutaneous procedures. The StealthStation™ System is indicated for any medical condition in which the use of stereotactic surgery may be appropriate, and where reference to a rigid anatomical structure, such as the skull, a long bone, or vertebra, can be identified relative to a CT- or MR- based model, fluoroscopy images, or digitized landmarks of the anatomy. www.medtronic.com/stealthstation
